About Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal. It was established in 1973 and granted the status of a World Heritage Site in 1984. It covers an area of 952.63 km2 (367.81 sq mi) and is located in the subtropical Inner Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal in the districts of Nawalpur, Parsa, Chitwan and Makwanpur. In altitude it ranges from about 100 m (330 ft) in the river valleys to 815 m (2,674 ft) in the Churia Hills.[1]

In the north and west of the protected area the Narayani-Rapti river system forms a natural boundary to human settlements. Adjacent to the east of Chitwan National Park is Parsa National Park, contiguous in the south is the Indian Tiger Reserve Valmiki National Park. The coherent protected area of 2,075 km2 (801 sq mi) represents the Tiger Conservation Unit (TCU) Chitwan-Parsa-Valmiki, which covers a 3,549 km2 (1,370 sq mi) huge block of alluvial grasslands and subtropical moist deciduous forests.

Bird Watching

The Chitwan National Park is one of the best places in the world to observe and study rare bird species. Many migrating birds arrive at Meghauli in the winter from as far as Siberia to enjoy the lush vegetation and safe habitat within and around Chitwan National Park. We recommend hiring our inhouse guides for the optimum bird watching experience to maximize your chances of seeing different species of birds. There are Separate zones identified in the National park for bird watching. The bird watching zones are between 4-5 kms. Good binoculars and cameras are indispensable instruments during your bird watching tour.

An early morning walk through the bush and along the Rapti river is a must! Many of the exotic birds, including the Giant Hornbill, Lesser Florican and Paradise Flycatcher along with other migratory birds can be sighted.

Jeep Safari

Jeep Safari is an exciting ride on an open top jeep into the dense forest of jungle. It is possible to closely observe the wild animals as well as take their snaps during jeep safari. Jeep Safari offers relative safety from wild animals.

As Jeep Safari are operated with regularly inside the jungle of Meghauli the wildlife are used to the right of jeeps carrying tourists, and generally do not run away when the jeep gets near. The safari operators also stop the vehicle of any wild animal is encountered or seen from a distance. Thus the jeep safari is an excellent way to observe the wild animals and travel through the jungles in National Park.

Jungle Walk

Jungle walk is one the adventurous and entertaining activity of Chitwan National Park. One can walk through dense forest around the natural habitat of the wild animals during the jungle walk. The tourist and the guides are not allowed to carry any weapon during the walks but the guides offer tips for safety at the start of the walk. The danger of sudden encounter with wild animals is always present during the jungle walk.

The majority of these encounters involve wild elephants and rhinos. Thus maximum caution should be exercised during the walk that provide opportunity to observe the wild life from up close. It is always a wise decision to take the aid of experienced guide during Jungle walk. The guides take the tourist for 5 to 10 km walk at one time offering a chance to observe the wild animals and birds. One should not make the slight noise during the walk. Chitwan National Park is a considered as the best destination in Nepal for Jungle Walk.

Sunset Picnic

Tourist can also embark on canoe ride along the Rapti River inside the Chitwan National Park and take a close view of crocodiles and other wild animals. Tourist are excited to look at the crocodiles taking sunbath on the river banks and take their photographs. The crocodiles basking motionlessly under the sun with their snouts wide.

In Canoeing ride on the Rapt River you see the popular Marsha Mugger and Ghariyal Crocodiles in theirs’ natural habitation. Swimming Pool

Our outdoors swimming pool is the newest addition to the Sarang Wildlife property. The pool’s major attraction is the Pool Bar that caters to all your needs along with light snacks.

Guests enjoy swimming, playing water sports and endulging in amazing varieties of drinks prepared by the Bartender. There are numerous beds, around the pool for you to grab a book and read away into the wilderness.

Tharu Tribal Dance

The Tharu Cultural Program organized at Meghauli plays a significant role in entertaining the tourists visiting Chitwan National Park. It introduces the Tharu Culture and tradition to our guests and majority of the visitors arriving in Chitwan opt to experience the Tharu culture.

Guests get full entertainment package by the Tharu dancers. Dancers like Danda Nach (Stick Dance) and Ago Nach (Fire Dance) Mayur Nach (Peacock Dance) are some of the popular highlights of the cultural show. The program lasts for about 30 to 40 minutes. The cultural program has helped spread awareness about the Tharu culture through out the world.

Tharu Village Walk

The village tour is famous for close and personal observation of the Tharu culture. Tourists like to take village tour to witness the daily lifestyle and activities of the Tharu community. The Tharu community reside along the entire length of the Terai plains of Nepal but Chitwan is especially popular for their traditional culture. There is a choice between foot or tonka ride for village tour. It is advisable to take the aid of a guide during the tour to better understand the local customs.

For centuries, the Tharu have lived very closed to this protected area and hence their tradition reflects their intimate relationship with the natural world. Visit the Tharu village and share their world with them as you reach out to touch another culture.
